SHORT DESCRIPTION
The project, located in Yangpo Village, Shanxi Province, represents a holistic village renewal initiative guided by operational strategy and rooted in local context. Respecting the village’s existing fabric, eight courtyard compounds and one inn have been constructed on the sites of former village houses, fostering a harmonious symbiosis between tradition and modernity. Architecturally, the design draws inspiration from traditional cave dwellings, reinterpreting this vernacular archetype through a contemporary lens. While referring to the arched openings of traditional cave dwellings as a cultural motif, the architecture introduces concrete frame structures to enhance spatial flexibility, daylighting, and natural ventilation. Facade materials and color palettes echo the loess landscape, cultivating a spatial atmosphere that is both rustic and distinctly modern. Technically, the project innovatively integrates modular standardization with local construction craftsmanship. A 2.6-meter-span arched cave module serves as the basic spatial unit, enabling replication and varied combinations to reduce costs and shorten the construction timeline. The reception center employs a steel structure to create large-span spaces, while the accommodation areas adopt concrete frames—balancing structural rationality with regional adaptability. Functionally, the project integrates two accommodation typologies: courtyard compounds and a small-scale inn. This dual model reinforces the brand’s identity and also enhances operational efficiency. Shared amenities such as a café and workshop foster community interaction and provide flexibility for future operations. Following an “operation-first” philosophy, the project has created employment opportunities for villagers through localized management and driven the revival of rural industries, generating tangible social value. Its success is measured not only by economic returns but also by community recognition and engagement, establishing a replicable path for culturally grounded, community-driven rural revitalization.
