SHORT DESCRIPTION

ROJO Space serves both as a historic industrial landmark with cultural significance and as a futuristic space for contemporary art and culture. Rising from the former site of the Shanghai No. 10 Steel Factory, it was designed by acclaimed architect Ryue Nishizawa. It preserves the defining character of the original architecture while weaving in modern functions and a contemporary design language. The name “ROJO”, meaning red in Spanish, echoes the iconic red bricks and the site’s blazing industrial history. It carries forward the cultural identity of the “Red Town” and symbolizes the vibrant renewal of the old site within a modern context. The design takes inspiration from natural elements such as clouds, wind, and waves, employing extensive transparent materials to dissolve the sense of enclosure and establishing a dialogue between “transparency and solidity” and “weight and lightness”. Generous use of glass and open structures invites natural light into the interior, while framing outdoor greenery as living works of art—softening the boundary between inside and outside. As daylight shifts from dawn to dusk, light and shadow weave through the space, breathing it with a sense of fluid vitality—where the weight of historical architecture resonates in harmony with the lightness and elegance of contemporary buildings. ROJO Space features a clear and efficient functional layout. With three main zones—the Multi-Functional Hall, the Central Garden, and the Art Center, ROJO Space can host cutting-edge fashion shows, diverse art exhibitions, and cultural and recreational performances through flexible combinations of multifunctional spaces. By integrating art, exhibition, and performance, it aspires to become a trendsetting cultural hub that unites art, trends, entertainment, fashion, and lifestyle.
